Apostolos Malatras

Background

I was born in Athens, Greece, my origins being in the prefecture of Trikala in mainland Greece.

Since January 2009 I have been a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, involved in the activities of the Pervasive and Artificial Intelligence Research group, which is led by Professor B. Hirsbrunner. As of March 2010 I have been actively involved in the BioMPE - Bio-Inspired Monitoring of Pervasive Environments research project, which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. I was the author of the project proposal.

Prior to this position, I had been working as a Senior Engineer for Thales Research & Technology (UK), on the EC partially funded I3CON project, which mainly dealt with service oriented architectures, wireless sensor networks and their integration to provide intelligent, pervasive building management systems.

Having completed the requirements for obtaining the Greek National Diploma, I studied Computer Science at the University of Piraeus Greece , Department of Informatics and graduated in 2001 having successfully completed the 4-year BSc degree. My final year project was on "Crisis management information systems".

I then continued my academic course by attending the MSc in Information Systems at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Informatics. I completed the MSc course in 2003 and my final year MSc dissertation was on "Security in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks", for which I was awarded the ERICSSON (Hellas) Award of Excellence in Telecommunications in 2003.

In 2003 I joined the University of Surrey, Department of Electronic Engineering, Centre for Communication Systems Research and under the supervision of Professor G. Pavlou (currently with University College London), I commenced studying towards a PhD degree. My research was partially supported by Thales Research & Technology (UK). In May 2007 I was awarded the PhD degree after successfully defending my thesis on "Context awareness for the self-management of mobile ad hoc networks". During my studying at the University of Surrey I also worked as a research assistant in the EC funded EMANICS and the UK EPSRC PAN projects.
