The workshop on Ubiquitous Computing Middleware 2011 (UCM 2011) will be held on the 27 - 28 of June 2011 at the Department of Informatics of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.
The workshop will be organized into three highly interesting talks, which will be given by internationally distinguished invited speakers. Additionally, there will be a panel discussion on the issues, challenges and open research questions as these will be raised during the talks.
The participants of the workshop will be primarily researchers and PhD students, although Masters level students are also invited.
Since the initial conception and introduction of the ubiquitous computing paradigm by Weiser in 1991 there has been a plethora of research work, both industrial and academic, with the aim of achieving the envisaged ubiquity, transparency, interoperability, usability, pervasiveness and user-friendliness of computing systems.
While simplicity and seamless integration where the driving forces for this computing paradigm shift, the vast number of proposed related and enabling technologies, frameworks, models, standards, systems, etc. has significantly increased the perceived complexity and therefore acts as a hindering factor for its widespread deployment and adoption.
Ubiquitous computing middleware approaches strive to alleviate these complexity issues, by building on principles of integration, abstraction, interoperability and cross-layer design. Coinciding with the 20 year anniversary of the ubiquitous computing realm, this workshop will review existing approaches and mainly look into future and innovative trends on middleware solutions for this realm, whilst in parallel it will highlight the associated research problems and identify open issues.
