Data Warehousing

Description: 

The main focus in conventional transactional databases is daily business. Data is altered frequently in order to continually track daily transactions.  To make business crucial decisions, it is often necessary to analyse consistent data over longer periods of time. Operational databases only give limited support for strategic business decisions, while a data warehouse extracts, processes and stores data from the operational databases in a timely manner. The data is stored in a multidimensional data cube, in which the dimensions are predefined values (for instance "time", "sales region" and "product").

Methods to aggregate (Slicing, Dicing, Drill down and Roll up) data over the dimensions make it possible to view data in different granularities. Furthermore, a data warehouse architecture offers interfaces to analyse (OLAP) data, which allow the stakeholders to acquire additional knowledge of their business and the market situation.
